The Biohof Steckermeier was run by Christine's parents as a dairy farm until 2007. Except for a few fattening animals, animal husbandry was abandoned that year and the fields were leased to neighboring organic farmers. Two years later Christine took over the farm.
"From that point on, we started thinking about how we could run the farm again," explains Georg Steckermeier.
“In 2011 to 2012 we converted the old cowshed into an organic chicken coop. We also farmed some of the fields ourselves.”
At the moment, 2,000 organic chickens cluck on their farm, which are mainly looked after by Christine. The eggs are delivered to 'Die Biohennen-AG', some of them are also sold directly at their farm.
The family currently farms 25 hectares of fields, meadows and forest. "In organic farming, I have to think a lot about crop rotation so that the yield and weed control are successful. You quickly notice that if something isn't right with the soil, then I can't compensate with chemical agents and fertilizer in the short term. The organic cultivation of the fields is much more interesting and at the same time a greater challenge for me," explains the Biokreis farmer.
That is what drives the Steckermeier family
What is left over at the end of the year is not as important to the two of them as what is going on in the background. The family is driven by the preservation of small-scale agriculture and the living space for people and animals over several generations and all of this from a nature-friendly, biological point of view.
But Christine and Georg are not only concerned with the management of their farm with food production. "Since my wife is on the farm, she can also take care of the in-laws and the uncle, who would otherwise have to be accommodated in a care facility," explains Georg.
Georg also came to Barnhouse through his work as a sales representative in the after-sales business for forklifts. Especially since our products are regionally produced, processed and offered for sale in the organic market around the corner, the family is happy to deliver to us. "Because of the short distances, farmers like us have a connection to the product right up to the shop counter. Barnhouse mueslis are on our menu almost every day because they are simply delicious”.
