„You have to take everything as it comes“

„The farm was bought by my grandfather in 1956 from a couple. The four sons of the wife Rosina Soller had not come back from war and Jacob Soller had no children. So the farm was sold with debts and the obligation to care for the married couple Soller in old age. The farm has been steadily expanded over the years and in 1960 the first tractor came to the farm.“, explains Stefan Zehner the story about his farm.

By the way, the tractor he is talking about is still in the family’s possession. The farm’s dairy farm was converted to breeding sows in 1979. In 1994, livestock farming was completely abandoned, about a year later, conventional farming was abandoned.

Farm takeover and conversion to organic farming

„My wife Sandra and I started farming again in 2014 and knew from the beginning, that we wanted to run our farm according to the organic farming guidelines. We have worked very closely with the Biohof Freiberger in this aspect.“

In addition to working at the farm, Stefan is also working at Schwieger Dienstleistung GbR. „Here, seeds are processed, packagaed and everything that belongs to that.“

Planting of oil pumpkin planned

And I’m sure it won’t get boring on the farm. In addition to the cultivation of cereals, legumes and grassland. The organic farmer is always trying out something new. In 2021, he wants to grow oil pumpkins for the first time.

He also wants to see what happens to his products, which is why he appreciates the partnership with Barnhouse so much.

“We are happy to be Barnhouse farmers, because we know what is made of our products and the issue of regionality can be lived from producer to processing. The partnership with Barnhouse is fun and it is proof, that you can succeed even without exploiting the farmers.”

Achieving life values for the future

For Stefan, the most important aspect of his work is the farming of nature and the future. Above all, he wants to enable his children to have a future that is also worth living. A driving force for this is also life in its fields: “Whether plants, insects, birds or all the low game, it is fun to show that is also possible to do otherwise.
